Are you looking for a good trail mix recipe? Healthy trail mix is a must for any hiking trip. It contains a lot of calories in a small space. The problem is, commercially packed trail mixes have unwanted ingredients and may not be as healthful as you think.
I find that the best trail mix blends are the ones that I make myself. That way, I know exactly what I am getting. This simple trail mix recipe is extremely versatile because basically, trail mix is a hodge-podge of ingredients. As long as it’s healthy and contains enough calories to give you plenty of energy on your hike, that’s all that matters.
Trail Mix Recipe
1 cup healthy cereal of your choice
1/2 cup nuts
1/4 cup dried fruit
1/4 cup whole grain snack crackers, pretzel rods, or baked potato chips
1/4 cup chocolate pieces or chocolate or yogurt covered raisins, optional
You can choose any ingredients that you want/ I personally like to put the original flavored Cheerios in my trail mix. For nuts, I most often have peanuts on hand so I put those. For dried fruit, I like to use papaya and mango but normally only have raisins on hand.
Then, I like to add something crunchy and salty. I mostly choose pretzels because I can find whole grain ones. My favorite chocolate ingredient are mini chocolate chips because they are the perfect size and last longer.
Basically, you can do whatever you want when you make your trail mix. Just use my recipe as a guide. You can even change the amounts if you want. My recipe is based purely on personal preference.
For example, you may find that you would rather use granola over Cheerios, cashews over peanuts, white chocolate chips instead of dark chocolate chips. It really doesn’t matter – all that matters is that you have food for your belly while hiking!
